The Environment

Two-thirds of local residents are concerned the state will shut down water wells in the San Luis Valley because one section of the valley aquifer is shallow and not meeting sustainability goals set by the state. Using the untapped aquifer 2,000 feet below our Valley, we can solve our most pressing challenges and improve and invest in the surrounding environment.

One investment includes adding over three thousand acres of elk habitat near the Baca Wildlife Refuge.

And because the water in this project will come from 2,000 feet below ground, there will be no impact on wildlife or vegetation in the San Luis Valley. In fact, by replenishing the shallow aquifer and improving surface flows, we will preserve aquatic habitats and our wildlife for generations to come.
